Description / Position Overview About the Job: The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) is seeking a
Senior Background Investigator to lead our Background Investigation Unit. This critical role ensures that all background investigations are conducted thoroughly, professionally, and in compliance with departmental policies. The Senior Background Investigator will oversee the unit's day-to-day operations, supervise staff, and play a key role in maintaining the integrity of our hiring process.

#3 IN THE NATION ! #1 IN COLORADO ! As a Senior Background Investigator, you will: - Supervise and coordinate the activities of the Background Investigations Unit including assigning cases, reviewing work, and providing guidance
- Review and approve background investigations to ensure compliance with department policies, professional standards, and legal requirements
- Train and mentor background investigators, ensuring consistency and thoroughness in the investigative processes
- Develop and implement policies, procedure, and best practices for the Background Investigations Unit, and ensure they are followed
- Conduct in-depth background investigations on potential civilian and sworn applicants for positions at the Colorado Springs Police Department
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and equipment, including computers and supporting software
- Knowledge of investigative processes and procedures
- Ability to prioritize, multitask and maintain a detailed schedule
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing
- Ability to coach employees and create a cohesive team
- Ability to make decisions regarding implementation of goals, objectives, strategies and policies
Minimum Qualifications - Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade (high school diploma or GED).
- Five years of full-time professional experience in a related field, including one year of administrator and/or supervisory experience.
- Must possess or be able to acquire the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Colorado Crime Information Center (CCIC) certification within three months of start date.
One year of relevant work experience may be substituted for one year of required education (OR) one year of relevant academic coursework beyond the minimum requirement may be substituted for one year of required professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications - Strong computer skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel and databases
- Experience with background investigation software
- Specialized training related to background investigations
- Three (3) years of experience conducting background investigations for a law enforcement agency
- One (1) year of experience supervising a team with a high volume workload
- Experience managing case assignments and reviewing reports
