Under this agreement, MMA handles site operations and visitor services, while the THC's Museum Director ensures that museum standards, policies, and procedures are maintained. The Director oversees major interpretive and exhibit development projects, advises on business and program development, and safeguards the museum's assets. This position reports to both the THC and the MMA Board and involves providing strategic direction and guidance for the museum's operations. Work involves directing museum operational staff; providing leadership in management; and directing and participating in programming, fundraising, marketing, development of strategic vision, collection stewardship, general business management, and state funding financial management. Responsible for providing museum business knowledge as well as standards and guidance while maintaining clear, open, and timely communication with both organizations. May train others. Work under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Lead interpretive and exhibit development, and provide day-to-day museum operational management, oversight, and direction of daily operations and administration. Support the MMA’s day-to-day operation of the Museum under the direction of the THC’s Executive Director and MMA Chairman. Assess museum operational performance to ensure appropriate assignment and best utilization of available staff. Work with various departments on all program, exhibit, business, and development plans for the Iwo Jima Monument and Museum. Communicate issues, opportunities, and agency planning needs to the MMA and Historic Sites management effectively. Plan, assign, and oversee the work of Iwo Jima Monument and Museum employees. Establish goals and objectives; develop and approve schedules, priorities, and standards for achieving goals. Maintain a productive, team-oriented work atmosphere. Attend MMA Board meetings and THC Commission meetings and provide status reports as required. Coordinate with the MMA Board of Trustees in efforts to raise funds to support projects and programs. Oversee recruiting, hiring, training, and performance evaluation of museum staff. Develop and implement techniques for evaluating program activities. Review and develop guidelines, procedures, rules, and regulations for Commission and/or MMA Board approval. Represent the Commission and MMA at meetings, conferences, and seminars.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in business, museum studies, education, history, communications, or a closely related field. Minimum five years’ work experience in planning and managing complex museum exhibit and interpretive projects and/or programs. Experience involving museum construction or renovation. Experience in establishing and managing capital campaigns or fundraisers. Demonstrated work experience in supervising or leading a team to successfully achieve results. Experience conducting employee coaching and counseling, and managing operational and employee performance. Experience making presentations to groups, communities, and executive level staff. Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record. Required to travel up to 10% of the work period.

PREFER:

Experience with administrative best practices for cultural institutions. Experience managing a major cultural facility upgrade and expansion. Knowledge in interpretive and exhibit means and methods. Well-connected in the cultural institutional professional environment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Excellent leadership, management, and strategic planning skills. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of Texas WWII History and related topics. REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION, OR LICENSURE: Must have or obtain a valid Driver’s License and complete a Defensive Driving Course. ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: The workplace setting is a cultural institution, in an office and outdoor settings. This employee typically works irregular hours with days off other than Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays. This position may involve walking, standing, and safely lifting items weighing up to 30 pounds.
