Southeastern Louisiana Universitys College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences invites applications for the position of Department Head for the Department of Music and Performing Arts. The Department is seeking a dynamic individual who is an active and accomplished practitioner in their discipline to provide strong and effective leadership for the Department of Music and Performing Arts. Southeastern Louisiana University is NASM accredited and offers the Bachelor of Music degree and Master of Music degree. The department has 16 full-time faculty, 2 full-time staff, and 9 part-time faculty.
The Department Head is the chief academic and administrative officer of the department. This position is a 12-month administrative appointment that reports to the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Responsibilities include managing the day-to-day operation needs of the department, including the supervision and evaluation of all faculty and staff; administration of the departmental budget; and recruitment and retention of students and faculty. The successful candidate must be dedicated to excellence in teaching. Additionally, the candidate must demonstrate an ability to establish a collegial environment, develop facilities, and possess an interest in working collaboratively at the departmental, college, and university levels. In addition to administrative duties, the Department Head is expected to teach courses in their field of expertise and maintain a research/creative activity agenda. Southeastern Louisiana University is a progressive and comprehensive university that has an undergraduate enrollment of more than 13,500 students. The Universitys main campus is located in Hammond at the crossroads of Interstates I-55 and I-12 in the heart of Louisianas thriving Northshore, the fastest-growing region in the state. It is centrally located within an hours drive of New Orleans, Baton Rouge (the state capitol), and the Mississippi Gulf Coast, which affords extensive cultural, recreational, and research opportunities. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Doctorate in a music discipline (e.g. performance, musicology, theory, education, etc.) DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS Experience in academic administration is strongly preferred Experience with the NASM Accreditation processes Strong written and oral communication skills Experience with curriculum development Effective in planning, communicating, coordinating, problem-solving, negotiating, setting goals, and representing the department, college, and University Possesses personal qualities such as openness, integrity, and objectivity Applicants must be committed to working with diverse populations Ability to understand the role of administration and accept administrative authority and responsibility REQUIRED DOCUMENTS Cover Letter Resume/Vita Copies of Transcripts (Only an unofficial transcript for the highest degree is required at application.
