Job Summary

Reporting to the Senior Director of Student Health and Wellness, the Assistant Director of Disability and Accessibility Support Services (DASS) oversees all resource service delivery and outreach efforts for students with disabilities at UM-Flint. This role involves promoting and implementing best practices in accessibility, determining reasonable accommodations, and assessing service effectiveness. Additionally, the Assistant Director of DASS manages designated staff and collaborates with students, faculty, staff, and administration to enhance campus accessibility, foster diversity, and support disability inclusion.

Responsibilities*

Service Delivery

  • Respond to student requests for accommodations and participate in an interactive process to identify barriers and determine reasonable accommodations.
  • Coordinate accommodations and disability related support in collaboration with students, faculty, and staff
  • Maintain accurate records of accommodation requests, accessible course materials, and assistive technology support.
  • Coordinate student access to and learning of assistive technology required for access to UM-Flint's curriculum
  • Manage the coordination of testing accommodations and support coaching services
  • Engage with prospective students at the point of inquiry regarding support services through DASS and other campus partners
  • Develop outreach strategies to promote DASS among students, faculty, and staff
  • Use and manage the data system (Accommodate) for department assessment and reporting
  • Read and interpret medical documentation related to student disability and accommodation requests

Leadership and Management

  • Recruit, train, and oversee DASS Staff, including student staff, time approval and evaluation of work performance
  • Complete scheduling, time approval, and evaluation of work performance of staff
  • Participate in designated Division of Student Affairs, UM-Flint, and external committees, task forces, community agencies and related bodies, including appropriate professional associations and as otherwise assigned by the Senior Director of Student Health & Wellness
  • Serve as a member of the Campus Assessment, Response, and Evaluation (CARE) Team

Department Operations

  • Manage vendor relations in collaboration with the Procurement Office and the Senior Director of Student Health & Wellness
  • Maintain department budget to align with goals and projects
  • Develop and implement a plan for department objectives, including assessment and reporting
  • Prepare reports for relevant partners and funding agencies
  • Collaborate with marketing and communications to maintain the department website and outreach strategies.
  • Ensure inventory tracking and accessibility-related purchases
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to remain current in best practices within the disability service/student access profession.
  • Maintain knowledge of all federal, state, and campus policies impacting students with disabilities including (ADA and ADAA related to higher education; Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1972)

Institutional Support

  • Promote universal design of curricular, co-curricular, and information environments
  • Serve on designated UM-Flint committees to promote and increase inclusion and access for students with disabilities
  • Organize and present workshops, training sessions, and events on disability awareness and accessibility.
  • Collaborate with campus and community programs to provide comprehensive support services
  • Serve as a designated Campus Safety Authority (CSA) in accordance with the Clery Act.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Higher Education Administration, or related field
  • 3 or more years of relevant experience related to listed job responsibilities
  • 1 or more years of management experience and/or supervisory responsibilities
  • Knowledge of ADA and ADAA related to higher education, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1972
  • Familiarity with disability models and inclusive educational design in higher education
  • Proficient in common computer application and knowledge of assistive technologies
  • Experience in strategic planning, operational management, and program development

Hybrid :
The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
